50+ Leads to Mindful Gifting
Everyone needs a new scarf or sweater sometimes. And there are gift-giving occasions
when mindful gifting means only the specific, branded, or trendy something or other in the fancy box will do. Nothing wrong with that. Especially if, like Ralphie, that’s what the giftee needs or desires.
We’ve probably all known occasions when what we’ve picked was an unsatisfying default decision. Hopefully, we’ve all also known the shared exuberance and joy when giving a gift that hits. Part of that is the presentation. More on that later, first, you need to pick the gift.
Today tech has made it easier than ever for local small businesses and organizations to compete with the anonymous behemoths. With just an extra click or two, the mindful gifter can combine choosing a surprising, and delightful gift with THEIR CHOICE of the convenience of online shopping, or the romance of a personal transaction with a real, live person.
And even if you need something specific, branded, or in the fancy box that’s not available locally, go directly to the manufacturer or distributor. When they’re not paying a cut to behemoths, their prices are better, often with cheap to free shipping.
But knowing where your giftee’s heart lies is key, why these leads are grouped by topic.
And true mindful gifting requires you get on it sooner than later
Almost all Westchester County locations, but hey, mindful gifting understands even the franchises are owned and staffed by your neighbors. And if you’re not in Westchester, take the ideas and source them in your own area.
Last-mindful gifting gives thought to the presentation as well as the gift itself.
- I’ve gone goofy with my noseypants giftees, wrapping their gifts in unexpected things like cereal boxes or coffee tins.
- If the gift is an obvious shape or size, weighting the box, even making it a scavenger hunt with gift-wrapped clues adds to the fun tremendously. Probably got that from my dad, who, when proposing to my mother gave her 2 boxes. She went for the big fancy one first, it was a coconut. The other held the ring.
- If a gift card is the star, wrap it up with a small thematic something or other. THINK: New ski gloves with a lift ticket inside, or movie house membership taped to a box of Junior Mints.
Happy Gifting!
For some really one-of-a-kind finds, thrifting is the way to go!
Whether brick or mortar or online, you’re shopping local; keeping it green by upcycling and yes, probably saving some bucks in the process. Thrifting lets you find things you could never, ever dream of on your own.
- Before you bid on an online auction, read all the details of the bidding and pick-up process. I’m a fan of Clearinghouse Estate Sales, have already nailed 2 holiday gifts. But if you love the thrill of the hunt, here are some local shops to check out.
Millennials aren’t the only ones who prefer experiences to stuff.
- Creative? Try classes in painting , pottery making, knitting, beaded jewelry, or pottery painting.
- Sporty? What about sessions of rock climbing, bowling, archery, There’s always a round of golf, a bucket of balls or horseback riding sessions. OR the Olympic sport most everyone is pretty sure they could do ok at themselves, curling!
- New/different activities? Think about an escape room, cooking classes, NYC walking tours, grand prix racing, or dance lessons! Or a behind-the-scenes tour of your giftee’s favorite sports venue, museum, or theater could be just the thing to brighten a dreary winter weekend!
Wellness and Nutrition
- Consider classes in yoga or meditation, or nutrition coaching, Check with the proprietor for any upcoming special events like rekki and sound bath healing.
Personal Services
So many sources in this category, best guidelines:
- Know the giftees heart, then source by seeking personal recommendations.
- If its a service they have an established connection for, go there. Don’t ask them to switch manicurists or car detailers.
- Could be fun, like an Astrology or Psychic reading; as practical as pre-paid babysitting; or as pampering as a spa treatment.
- If you’re thinking out-of-left-field, something they’d never pay for themselves (personal stylist, housecleaning service, even a color or space planning consultant) first make sure someone else who knows the giftee thinks it’s a good idea too. If it’s too personal, it can backfire.
